If you love the thrill of a good, 4x4 adventure, then you need to add the CREB Track to your bucket list. Noted as one of Australia’s most challenging off-road tracks, it’s a unique and wonderful way to experience the beauty of the Daintree Rainforest - if you dare.
This two-day itinerary is perfect for adventure seekers who want to take the scenic (and muddy) route from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation via the Daintree Village and CREB track. Before setting out, remember the track can close due to heavy rain, so always check the road conditions here before you set off.
Morning:
Starting from Port Douglas, take advantage of the laid-back coastal drive to Daintree Village before the adventure begins. If you didn’t manage time to get brekky in, don’t fret because this quaint little town is only about a 50 minute drive and the local Croc Xpresso Cafe is a great spot to fuel up. Tucked amidst the rainforest, Daintree Village is an iconic part of the region filled with plenty of wildlife.
Afternoon:
All right, so you’re fed, watered and seen some pretty special wildlife - now it’s time to hit the track! Remember, this track isn’t for the faint hearted and make sure you’re prepared for whatever it might throw at you. Battle your way along the steep, muddy and challenging “road” that stretches for over 70km.
Notable stops include Big Red Hill and Roaring Meg Falls which is great spot to stop for a swim and a picnic lunch. Please keep in mind that this site is sacred to the local Kuku Yalanji people and you are required to get a permit before visiting. Contact the Burrungu Aboriginal Corporation on 07 4098 6248 or 07 4060 3132 to gain a permit.
Evening:
Once you’ve made it out the otherside, there’s probably just one thing you’re after - an ice cold beer. Lucky for you, the famous Lions Den Hotel just outside of Cooktown will be waiting for you. You can also grab a hearty pub feed and even set up for the night at their onsite campground, complete with its own safe swimming hole.
Day 2: CREB Track to Cape Tribulation
Morning:
Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest and we recommend enjoying a slow morning after a big day of excitement yesterday. But the fun isn’t over - you’ve got to get home! Once you’re ready to hit the road, you’ll drive south towards Cape Tribulation via the Bloomfield Track. This is another 4WD only track but slightly less intense than the CREB. Weather conditions do affect this road as well, so again, be sure to check here before you set off.
Afternoon:
After the 72km drive, treat yourself to a swim at the gorgeous Emmagen Creek as a little treat to yourself for a trek well done. From here, it’s just a short drive to Cape Tribulation where you can stretch your legs with a stroll up the Kulki Boardwalk and stop for lunch. If you’re after one more swim in the rainforest (and why wouldn’t you be?) make a pit stop at Mason’s Swimming Hole where for a gold coin donation, you can literally swing from the trees straight into a freshwater creek. Then, it’s time to make the two hour journey back to Port Douglas but not before stopping at Daintree Ice Cream Co for three scoops of tropical flavour heaven in a cup.
Be prepared: The CREB Track is notorious for being impassable after rain. Always check track conditions before setting off and make sure you have (and know how to use) recovery and safety equipment. Also make sure you have ample fuel
4WD Only: This track is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure your vehicle is equipped for steep climbs and muddy terrain.
Be Croc Wise: Always remember, you are in croc country. This track passes over a number of rivers and waterways and while the weather will have you wanting to jump in, only do so in designated areas.
